Frequently Asked Questions
What is polished concrete?
Simply put, polished concrete is a multi-step process of grinding and honing (polishing) of existing concrete substrates with specialized equipment and tooling to create a uniform, consistent floor finish with a desirable gloss sheen. At CSI we utilize SASE PDG 8000 grinders, SASE Bull 1250 vacuums, and SASE tooling in our process. SASE Co is the industry leader for concrete polishing equipment and tooling in North America.
Getting back to the process, depending on the depth of grinding (typically 1-2 mm) aggregates inherent within the concrete will be exposed, creating a unique and attractive architectural aesthetic (feature).
Additionally, polished concrete floors can be treated with a number of environmentally friendly products, such as densifiers and penetrating sealers, to provide both additional structural strength and topside protection from scuffing, abrasion, chemical attack, and water and oil staining. Again, we incorporate SASE SFS concrete treatment products in all of our projects.
Is polished concrete flooring expensive?
A polished concrete floor is a budget-wise and economical choice when compared to other flooring products, such as ceramic and masonry tile, terrazzo, sheet flooring goods, and hardwood flooring. As a durable and long-lasting flooring choice, polished concrete is easily maintained and requires a relatively low level of regular maintenance when compared to other flooring types. CSI will be happy to provide a cost-free quotation for your project.
Will polished concrete flooring always be gray? What are my options?
Literally everything under the sun. Polished concrete floors can be stained or dyed to meet any architectural requirement or match any room décor. Logos and stencils can even be installed to further customize a showroom or retail area. CSI utilizes Agio Imaging for logo and stenciling design, and our installation teams are experienced with detailing and adding finishing touches.
Our floor is in bad shape. Can it still be polished?
In most cases, almost every concrete substrate is a strong candidate for polished concrete floor finishing. By utilizing Ardex of America and Mapei Canada cementitious repair grouts and overlayment products we can create a new, structurally sound surface that will look and perform like it was just poured.
Polished concrete combines the durability of concrete with the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. It is easy to maintain, hard wearing and environmentally friendly.
The process involves diamond grinding with successively finer grits, then transitioning to resin bonded diamonds followed by the application of a surface densifier and guard product.
Polished Concrete is an excellent sustainable flooring option for Retail, Office, Industrial and Commercial facilities.
CSI can create a custom finish for you by adding color, logos or stenciling and a shine from matte to high gloss. The possibilities are endless.
